My paintings are about colour, light and geometry. I am constantly looking for underlying shapes, patterns and juxtapositions of colour that transform everyday places and objects from the ordinary to the extraordinary.

The stained glass windows of Norwich Cathedral that my mother took me to see throughout my childhood were a profound influence on my interest in colour, and a set of oil paints given to me at the age of seven kindled my lifelong love of painting.

I gained a BA Honours degree in Visual Art at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth and also qualified as a teacher – a profession I followed for many years.

Boatyards and pontoons are themes I return to frequently. The intricate patterns of masts and the elegant geometry of different types of vessels provide an infinite source of ideas for compositions. My inspiration may be fired by the clanking of masts on a windy day, sunlight on a rusty winch or the shifting patterns of reflections in water.

Houseboats in Amsterdam, streets in Montevideo, the expanses of water and sky in Friesland and the convoluting shapes of exotic plants are among the subjects I have explored when inspired by travels.

Ploughed fields and gently undulating landscapes around my home and studio in South Cambridgeshire provide a constant source of inspiration throughout the changing seasons.

Living in Riyadh and on the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia for two years has developed my abstract design ideas based on the rich local cultural heritage, and in representing the dramatic desert and marine landscapes.

I work mainly in acrylics and oil on canvas, my compositions evolving from observational sketches in watercolour and pastel and from photographs. I often rework compositions in differing degrees of abstraction. When I initially tackle a subject I may begin with a certain degree of realism. In subsequent paintings I will use the same configuration of shapes to explore different heightened colour schemes and develop the geometric stylisation of the forms.

I also produce smaller scale works experimenting with the purely abstract and decorative effects of mixed media, watercolour techniques, collage and printing.
